The following words fr REKA gallery with permission fr artist:

Chen Wei Meng, a native of Trengganu,
will be exhibiting 18 paintings of coastal land and seascapes as found,
literally, within 30km of Dungun, a small town not far from Kuala Trengganu.
The east coast region is famous
for its monsoons as much as it is for its beaches,
alternating between the extremes of tropical weather patterns
that dramatically affect its landscape. In this series of paintings,
Chen depicts these changes as well as its accompanying mood shifts.
Working with acrylics and from photographs,
Chen painstakingly reproduces in some of the paintings, the starkness of the Dungun area
under the harsh east-coast sunlight.
Chen bathes them in bright colours and throws blades of grass in sharp focus.
Chen’s approach, involving both photo referencing and memory
recall, produces in these canvases a strange hybrid of impressionistic,
super-flat and hyper-realist effects.
In a single canvas, it is not uncommon to find areas of raw colour and flat painting next to
impressionistic brush-work and obsessively realistic detailing, or
in a configuration involving any two of these stylistic aspects.
At their best, these express the optical exaggerations that occur
when one stays out in the sun for too long. In an effective juxtaposition,
Chen focuses in other paintings, on the somber tones of the monsoon
landscape with its overcast skies and blurry atmosphere using equal amounts of skill.
These are infused with a brooding romanticism that
effectively captures yet another aspect of the land and the sea in the region. In this exhibition,
Chen provides a visual experience of a place
that is particularly dear to him that is not static, but involves the passing of time and the
corresponding changes that occur in the landscape.
Chen worked for many years as a graphic artist before he started to build his career around painting in 1999.
For 2 years in 1992 and 1993, he travelled the European cities,
earning his keep as a street artist and working in Chinese restaurants.
In the evenings, he would enroll in drawing classes.
He returned to Malaysia in 1994 and subsequently settled in Dungun.
This will be his first solo exhibition.

Fr look of studio LDA - I have intentionally kept the picture files published here big,
so that you can feel for yourself ( in my opinion, it's still far from the power of a real piece work by the artist).

In May 07, studio LDA collaborated with Architron Design Consultancy to design a competition scheme : The Singapore National Art Gallery. We didn’t win the competition. But it was a wonderful experience to work with the staffs of Architron. Here’s our scheme:

Against the symbolic backdrop of the symbolic colonial city hall (now a converted national art gallery), the scheme seeks to interpret a political and architectural statement for people,

Instead of formalizing the entrance at ground level, the scheme connects the nearby promenade via a proposed underground art market (below the padang) to the colonial building.

The original ground entrance is now made a café, an urban stage for the public seen from the padang “parade field” right out side the colonial city hall.
The solid colonial building of authority is thereby set on a transparent platform.

The overall settings are linked to work like as an urban art festival venue.
